Our Impact

United, we fight

United Way of Brazoria County fights for the health, education, and financial stability for every person in every community.
United Way of Brazoria County and its partners provided over 1.2 million services in 2020-2021. Together, you can help us advance the common good and create opportunities for education, financial stability, health, and basic needs for everyone in Brazoria County.

Together, we can all LIVE UNITED.
Education

Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. We all have a stake in making sure children grow up to be productive citizens who give back to the community. Together we can help children and youth achieve their full potential.

We fight for education. Our work increases access to affordable childcare and early learning opportunities. We create opportunities for children to excel in school and provide after-school and mentoring programs for at-risk youth. We also address school readiness, and workforce development and job training for students transitioning into the workforce. United Way programs helped 29,568 kids in 2020.

To accomplish this educational impact, we partnered with 10 local programs last year to provide 132,203 educational services to Brazoria County children, youth and adults.

In addition to our support of community partner programs, UWBC also hosts local Read Across America Day volunteer opportunities every March in partnership with Brazoria County Head Start Learning Schools, Inc. and Upbring Head Start Schools. Last year, UWBC volunteers read to over 160 students in Alvin, Angleton, Lake Jackson, and Brazoria.

Health
Whether it is a neighbor without health insurance, a victim of abuse, or someone struggling with mental illness or addiction, health impacts every aspect of a person’s life. Together we can improve the health of the community.

We fight for Health. Our work increases access to basic health care services (general health, dental, vision, etc.). We work to reduce substance abuse, child abuse, and domestic violence. We promote health and preventative care education. We strengthen children and families through family involvement. We increase access to affordable mental health care, including counseling and other mental health care services. And we support disaster counseling and health care services for residents affected by crisis. In 2021, we funded 40 local health programs.

To accomplish this health impact, we partnered with 17 local programs last year to provide 72,613 health services to Brazoria County children, youth, and adults.

WE TAKE MENTAL HEALTH TO HEART
Mental Health is a hot topic as we have seen the death by suicide rate in Brazoria County rise consecutively over the past several years. From January 2019 to December 2021 there was a total of 106 deaths by suicide in Brazoria County.

In partnership with our Mental Health Taskforce and funding from Dow, UWBC created The Greater Gulf Coast Community Network (GGCC). The purpose of the network is to increase collaboration among Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in identifying Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) in order to provide solutions to the barriers that hold individuals and families back. One of our goals is to increase mental health resources and continuity of care in Brazoria County and reduce death by suicides. Together, we can rise above and Live United!

dedicated to helping hardworking people obtain job training and family sustaining wages.

To accomplish this financial impact, last year we partnered with 11 local programs to provide 1,142,311 income and basic needs services to Brazoria County to 36,181 children, youth, and adults. In addition to our support of community partner programs, UWBC also collaborates with local business to meet unexpected crisis.

UWBC also provides financial stability classes throughout Brazoria County. These classes provide attendees with the tools needed to make financially responsible decisions. We use real-world examples to teach the basics of banking, saving, and consumer rights.  These courses are provided free of charge to participants through the generous financial support of Wells Fargo and through the time and talent of local volunteers.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Initiatives provide assistance to low-income households by offering free tax preparation and filing assistance by trained volunteers for those who earned less than $55,000 in 2019. VITA volunteers help eligible citizens claim EITC and Child Tax Credits, saving them money through applying credits they otherwise may not have known they were eligible to receive.

We fight for basic needs. Our work supports residents with rent and utilities assistance. We address immediate crisis and a means to stability with food, clothing, and shelter. We jump to action after disasters, providing relief to the residents affected, including disaster case management and assistance.
