Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/Earned Income Tax Credit Initiative (VITA/EITC)
VITA/EITC is a solution for low-income households during tax season. The program provides help by offering free tax filing and assistance by trained volunteers for those who earn less than $53,000 per year. Volunteers help eligible citizens claim EITC and Child Tax Credits, saving them money through credits they otherwise would not have known they were eligible to receive. In 2016, 14 volunteers worked for 147 hours over 5 sites to submit 78 tax returns. The refunds of these returns totaled $124,438 and saved those households $40,076 in EITC and $26,565 on Child Tax Credits.
Financial Stability Classes
Classes educate individuals and provide them with the tools needed to make financially responsible decisions with their income. These classes utilize real world examples to teach the basics of banking, savings and consumer rights. UWBC is excited to annouce that, for the second year in a row, we have received a generous sponsorship from Wellsfargo in support of our Financial Stability Classes. In 2016, we offered five sessions with 43 individual participants.
