Who runs United Way of Brazoria County?

A Board of Directors, comprised of local volunteers from across the community, governs united Way of Brazoria County. These volunteers determine policy and oversee every aspect of the organization. Professional staff manages the day-to-day activities.

What is the difference between United Way of Brazoria County, United Way of America and other United Ways?

United Way of Brazoria County is a local, independently operated, volunteer-directed organization that raises funds benefiting Brazoria County. Other United Ways are operated separately and benefit their specific location. United Way of America is a national service organization and has a training center based in Virginia. Its purpose is to provide leadership, training and a wide variety of support services to more than 1,400 community-based United Ways across the nation.

Why give to United Way of Brazoria County?

Your United Way of Brazoria County touches one of every two lives in our community. Through our careful fund distribution and oversight process, we work hard to ensure that dollars are used wisely where they are most needed. Volunteers provide stewardship of your gift throughout the year by conducting site visits, reviewing programs and evaluating outcomes at every agency receiving United Way funds.

Additionally, United Way of Brazoria County is able to maximize the value of your investment by coordinating among nonprofit agencies and taking advantage of volunteer services. The thousands of individuals whose lives are touched by your gift thank you for caring. Thousands more need you to continue to invest in a stronger community for us all.

Who decides where the money is distributed?

It could be one of your business colleagues, friends, peers or neighbors. Yes, each year local Brazoria County citizens become Fund Distribution Committee volunteers who will make the difficult and thoughtful decisions about distributing the funds you contribute.

How?

  • The volunteers are trained to assess budgets, audits, and other financial reports.
  • The volunteers are divided into panels that have varied backgrounds and skills.
  • The volunteer panels make evaluation visits to assess United Way funded services and agency management capabilities.
  • The panels review budget requests and provide funding recommendations for each service.
  • The Fund Distribution Steering Team (composed of panel chairmen and vice chairmen who are veteran Fund Distribution volunteers) adjusts recommendations as necessary to the campaign's fund raising result.
  • The allocation recommendation is approved by the Board of Directors and distributed to the community care agencies to provide services to those in need

What is the result?

Fairness - through a broad cross section of volunteers...middle managers, laborers, independent business owners, minorities, women, retirees, etc.

Assurance - to you, the contributor, that your gift is being used to provide the most effective and needed services.

Unsurpassed Accountability - United Way requires budget reviews, annual audited financial statements, quarterly financial reports and beneficiary reports.
